Curtains: washed or dry cleaned

How a curtain is cleaned depends on its fabric.

• Cotton and cotton-blend curtains are washed and ironed. A panel under 6 ft is ₹75, 6–9 ft is ₹125 and over 9 ft is ₹200.
• Silk curtains and those with linings or delicate weaves are dry cleaned. A panel under 6 ft is ₹150, 6–9 ft is ₹250 and over 9 ft is ₹400.
• Clean curtains that only need pressing can be steam ironed from ₹35 a panel.

Before collection, please take the curtains down and remove hooks and rings. Measure the longest panel so you know which price band applies.

Blankets, quilts and razais

Polyfibre quilts and most blankets can be washed. A double quilt is ₹125 on Wash + Fold and a double blanket ₹125. A traditional cotton-filled razai is a different matter: water makes the cotton filling clump and it rarely dries evenly, so we recommend dry cleaning, from ₹325 for a single and ₹475 for a double. Bed sheets, cushion covers and pillows

Bed sheets are washed and folded from ₹35 for a single and ₹50 for a double, or washed and ironed from ₹80 for a double. Cushion covers and pillow covers can go in the same order. Diwali and season-change cleaning

In the weeks before Diwali, many homes across Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula take down the curtains, wash the sofa covers and air out the razais. It is also the point in the year when summer cotton sheets give way to quilts and blankets. Book early in October to avoid the last-minute rush, and plan curtains and quilts as one collection so everything returns together.

The second change comes in March, when quilts and blankets go into storage. Clean them before they go into the trunk; stored with sweat and dust, they pick up a musty smell over the summer. Caring for curtains between cleans

Chandigarh’s dry, dusty summer months are hard on curtains, especially in homes facing a main road. A light vacuum with a brush attachment every few weeks keeps dust from settling into the weave. Curtains in rooms that get strong afternoon sun fade along the folds over time; a lining helps protect the fabric and makes the curtain last longer. If you notice a dull grey cast or a dusty smell when you draw them, they are due for a clean. Heavy or lined curtains in particular should not be washed in a home machine, as the drum can tear seams and linings shrink at a different rate from the face fabric.
