The Chandigarh winter calendar

Most homes in Chandigarh bring woollens out in late October or November, when the evenings near Sukhna Lake and in the northern sectors turn cold, and put them away in March once the days warm up. Both moments are worth planning for.

• October and November: garments that were stored for eight months can smell musty or carry dust from the trunk. A clean before the first wear refreshes them.
• March: clean everything before storing. Body oils, food traces and sweat are what attract moths and carpet beetles, and stains that sit through a humid summer and monsoon are much harder to remove in the next season.

Pashminas, shawls and fine knits

Pashmina and fine wool felt and shrink when they are rubbed, wrung or washed in warm water, which is why so many shawls come out of a home wash smaller and stiffer. We dry clean them with our gentle Green Earth Cleaning process and fold them after finishing. A shawl or stole starts from ₹105 and a pashmina shawl from ₹200.

Sweaters are always returned folded. Hanging a knit stretches the shoulders and lengthens the body over time.

Coats, jackets and blazers

Tailored winter wear depends on its shape. After cleaning in our European-engineered machines, coats and blazers are finished on Veit, Macpi and Naomoto form finishers so lapels, shoulders and sleeves sit as they were cut, and are returned on hangers. A coat or blazer starts from ₹250 and a long coat from ₹290. If a lining has come loose or a button is missing, add it to the order through our alterations and repairs service.

How often to clean during the season

Woollens do not need cleaning after every wear. A sweater worn over a shirt can usually go several wears if it is aired overnight on a flat surface. A coat or blazer worn daily through December and January benefits from one clean in the middle of the season and another before storage. Shawls pick up hair oil and make-up at the edge that rests on the neck, so watch that edge. Signs that a woollen is due: a dull or flattened look, a smell that does not air out, marks at cuffs and collars, or pilling that has started to spread. Do not leave a stain until the end of winter; the longer it sits, the harder it is to treat.

Moth and storage tips

1. Store only clean, fully dry woollens.
2. Use breathable cotton bags or a clean trunk lined with cotton cloth rather than sealed plastic.
3. Fold knits; hang coats on broad, shaped hangers.
4. Dried neem leaves or cedar blocks help deter moths; keep naphthalene balls wrapped so they do not touch the fabric.
5. Air the trunk and check garments once during the monsoon.
